Energy Level
Very High; they are extremely active and require both significant physical activity and mental puzzles.
Trainability
Highly Trainable; though they can have an independent streak, they are quick learners who thrive on positive reinforcement and engagement.
Description
The smallest of the retrievers, the Toller is a compact, powerful, and agile dog. It is distinguished by its fox-like coloring and a lush, feathered tail that is carried high when the dog is alert.
Key Features
Triangular ears set high, fox-like wedge-shaped head, white-tipped tail, and a signature 'tolling' behavior that mimics a playing fox.
Coat Type
Water-repellent double coat of medium length. The outer coat is soft, dense, and slightly wavy, while the undercoat is thick and insulating. They are seasonal shedders.
Coat Colors
Various shades of red or orange (copper, crimson, or golden red) with white markings usually on the chest, feet, and tip of the tail.
Temperament
Affectionate, intelligent, and outgoing. They are known for being slightly more reserved with strangers than Golden Retrievers but intensely loyal to family.
Good with Children
Excellent; generally patient and energetic, making them great playmates for active children.
Good with Other Dogs
Good; they are typically sociable dogs, though early socialization is key to preventing over-excitement.
Grooming Needs
Moderate; requires weekly brushing to remove loose hair and more frequent attention during shedding season. Nails and ears should be checked regularly.
Exercise Requirements
High; needs at least 60-90 minutes of vigorous activity daily, including hiking, swimming, or retrieving.
Health Considerations
Generally healthy, but predisposed to hip dysplasia, progressive retinal atrophy (PRA), and autoimmune issues like Addison's Disease.
Living Conditions
Best suited for active households with yards. They can live in apartments if high energy needs are met, but they prefer cooler climates due to their thick coats.
History & Origin
Bred to mimic the playful antics of foxes, Tollers would lure ducks within range of hunters. They were officially recognized by the AKC in 2003.
Interesting Facts
Tollers are famous for the 'Toller Scream'—a high-pitched, vocal expression of excitement when they are ready to work or play.
