Origin
England — developed in the mid-19th century as a cross between the Bulldog and the now-extinct White English Terrier to create a superior fighting and vermin-hunting dog.
Energy Level
High — requires significant daily physical activity and thrive on mental stimulation to prevent boredom-based destruction.
Trainability
Challenging — they are independent thinkers and can be very stubborn; require firm, patient, and consistent positive reinforcement from an early age.
Description
A muscular, strongly built dog with a unique egg-shaped head and a Roman nose. They are the 'gentleman's companions' of the terrier world, possessing a distinctively jaunty gait and a piercing, intelligent expression.
Key Features
Egg-shaped (ovoid) head, small triangular eyes, erect ears, Roman nose profile, and a thick-set muscular body/neck.
Coat Type
Short, flat, harsh to the touch with a fine gloss; single-coated with minimal seasonal shedding.
Coat Colors
Primarily white (as seen in image), but also solid or patched with brindle, black, red, fawn, or tricolor.
Temperament
Playful, mischievous, and courageous with a sweet-natured but stubborn disposition; known for being highly affectionate with family but clownish in behavior.
Good with Children
Good — known for being very tolerant of children and energetic playmates, though their strength means they should be supervised around toddlers.
Good with Other Dogs
Fair — can be territorial or aggressive toward other dogs if not socialized extensively from puppyhood; often better as an only pet.
Grooming Needs
Low — weekly brushing with a rubber mitt or soft brush, occasional baths, and regular nail trimming are sufficient.
Exercise Requirements
High — need at least 60-90 minutes of vigorous daily exercise including long walks, fetch, or hiking; benefit greatly from sports like agility.
Health Considerations
Prone to hereditary deafness (especially in white dogs), kidney disease, heart disease, patellar luxation, and skin allergies.
Living Conditions
Adaptable to apartments if properly exercised, but prefer a yard. They are sensitive to extreme cold and heat due to their short coats.
History & Origin
Created by James Hinks in the 1860s by crossing Bulldogs with White English Terriers. Later, Dalmatians were infused to produce the all-white 'White Cavalier' look popularized as a fashionable companion for gentlemen.
